The anaesthetist Gerard Furlong is a well known person in the medical profession with a number of excellent qualifications and scholarly achievements to his name. He attended St Bartholomew's hospital college and graduated in 1992 before starting his career as an anaesthetist. Doctor Gerard Furlong is a member of several medical societies whose aim is to improve patient care and develop new methods of practice. These include The Intensive Care Society, DAS (Difficult Airways Society) and also SCATA (Society for Computers And Technology in Anaesthesia).

During his time at St Bart's Ged Furlong represented the college in a number of sporting events. He was a member of the successful rowing team, played rugby union for the Veterans side and also represented the college skiing team.

Like many med students before him Ged worked his way through college by taking work as an ancillary nurse. His time spent working as an ancillary nurse not only allowed him to pay his fees and keep a roof over his head but also provided an understanding of the skills required to work in clinical practice. This knowledge would prove to be invaluable following his graduation from St Bart's when he began his career as a practicing anaesthetist.

The anaesthetist Gerard Furlong has worked in several hospitals in the UK over the course of his career. His first post was to Dunganon hospital in Northern Ireland where he worked on the Trauma ward and treated casualties from several high profile terrorist incidents including the shootings at Moy and the Tyban crossroads bombing.

Ged Furlong is currently retired from medical practice although he is still a regular contributor to a number of journals and newsletters. He is kept busy by several private business interests which are related to the medical profession. To relax and unwind Ged has taken up sailing as an old injury prevents him playing his true love which is rugby. He is now far more likely to be found on a lake instead of at the bottom of a scrum.
